As far as postseason starts are concerned, Lakyn Shull’s was, well, perfect.
Shull, a senior pitcher for River Ridge, threw a perfect game in the Royal Knights’ district tournament opener (Class 4A, District 8) against Nature Coast at Tom Varn Park in Brooksville on Monday.
Shull struck out nine Nature Coast batters in five complete innings of work. River Ridge defeated Nature Coast 15-0 in a five-inning, mercy-rule-shortened game.
“My pitches were working well, and my teammates did a great job of getting those putouts,” Shull said. “You can’t ask for anything more."
The perfect game was the second of Shull’s prep career. As a junior, she pitched a perfect game against Hernando on the same Tom Varn Park field.
River Ridge, the second seed in the tournament, is now the favorite to win the district title after top-seeded Sunlake was upset by Zephyrhills 6-1 in Monday’s quarterfinal.
“We’re on fire right now,” Shull said. “We’re hitting on all cylinders and everyone’s working well together. We’re all on the same page.”
