River Ridge senior pitcher Tommy Peterson has verbally committed to play at South Florida, Royal Knights coach Jack Homko confirmed Monday.

“It’s a weight off of his shoulders going into his senior year,” Homko said.

Peterson posted a 2.18 ERA and held opponents to a .195 batting average last season. He also plays shortstop for River Ridge but was recruited as a right-handed pitcher.

The 6-foot Peterson thrives on a fastball that tops out at 92 mph and mixes in a changeup and still-developing curveball.

“He’s a pretty complete player,” Homko said.

Peterson was a second-team All-North Suncoast selection by the Times last year. He chose USF over Central Florida, Georgia Southern and North Florida.

Homko said Peterson’s family wanted him to stay close to home, so committing to the Bulls made sense.

“It all seemed to work out for them,” Homko said.

Verbal commitments are non-binding. The early signing period for baseball recruits begins in November.
