Pitchers of the day
Junior Josh Mollett threw four shutout innings in relief for Gaither, which trailed TBT when he entered in the third inning. He finished with three strikeouts and allowed three hits. …Alonso’s Cody Beckman threw 4 1/3 shutout innings against Sickles, giving up one hit while racking up eight strikeouts.

Hitters of the day
Gaither’s Oscar Mercado scored twice and finished 2-for-3 on the day with a two-RBI single and a double that turned into an inside-the-park home run after a Tampa Bay Tech throwing error. …Alonso’s Juan Bracamonte finished 3-for-3 with a double, two singles, one RBI and two runs scored.

Defensive gem of the day
Down by four with a runner on second and one out in the top of the fourth inning, Sickles reliever Jordan Douglas saw his fastball ripped down the leftfield line. The ball curved foul but leftfielder Ivan Perez didn’t hesitate to make a leaping catch, crashing into the wall to get the out. Douglas got out of the inning two batters later without giving up a run.

Did you know?
Sickles’ Bob Pagano, Alonso’s Landy Faedo and Gaither’s Frank Permuy are the only baseball coaches their respective schools have ever had.

Dugout chatter
“We played (TBT) earlier this year and beat them handily which maybe wasn’t the best thing because our guys came into this one expecting to beat them. I think in the end we maybe out-muscled them with our talent level to win this game but we didn’t start well. We got a big performance from Josh (Mollett) who has ice water running through his veins. The kid said to give him the ball so we did and he delivered.” — Permuy
