Pitchers of the day
Junior hurler Manny Coto pitched a complete-game shutout against Tampa Bay Tech for Sickles, racking up three strikeouts and walking only one batter while giving up six hits. … Gaither senior Evan Gainey threw a complete-game shutout in the Cowboys’ win over Alonso. He allowed four hits and showed impeccable control, walking only one batter and striking out four.

Hitters of the day
Sickles sophomore leadoff man Xavier Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a single, double and two runs scored. … Cowboys senior Matt Frey went 3-for-3 with three singles and one RBI. … Frey’s teammate Oscar Mercado finished 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and three stolen bases.

Defensive gem of the day
With two out in the bottom of the sixth and a runner on second, Alonso’s Andrew Abbott hit a high chopper toward Gaither shortstop Mercado. The junior quickly charged in to catch the ball on the fly and threw a bullet on the run to get the runner at first and end the inning.

Did you know?
Tuesday was a rare occasion for Alonso, which was held without a stolen base. With more than 40 steals this season, the Ravens lead all teams in the Saladino Tournament in stolen bases.

Dugout chatter
“I was able to watch their hitters (Monday) when they played Sickles so I put together a plan of how I wanted to pitch them. I just focused on my lower body, kept my head still and tried to get into a groove. My curveball wasn’t really working today so I threw some different fastballs and the changeup a lot today and it worked. It feels good to shut out a team like that.” — Gainey
