Time is running out on some teams. Playoff projections are on hold. We need answers.

Tick. Tick. Tick.

Palm Harbor University was 3-0 once. Then they somehow squandered a 17-2 halftime lead, and running back Kenny Blanch got hurt, and Freddie Krueger shook the Hurricanes awake from their dream season.

They are now left with this: Win. Or else.

Without Blanch, it looks like Or Else, which is playing out the schedule and looking forward to the 2011 campaign, when Blanch, quarterback Billy Pavlock and wide receiver Hunter Beam return for their senior seasons.

Tick. Tick. Tick.

Boca Ciega was hyped in the preseason as a team to beat, and I guess I should apologize for that and just let the Pirates sink.

I still can’t believe it, though. The Pirates are now faced with having to beat Largo just to force a three-way tiebreaker, and that won’t be easy. But with Largo quarterback Juwan Brown injured, there is a sliver of hope.

See, there I go again.

Tick. Tick. Tick.

Class 5A, District 9 is going to look real interesting Saturday morning.

And by interesting, I mean interesting if a bunch of teams jockeying for second place and the right to travel to Bradenton for a drubbing by Manatee is interesting.

Say Gibbs beats Northeast, and Pinellas Park beats Seminole, both of which we think will happen.

That would leave all four teams at 1-1.

Determining your district runnerup would then require some very complex math, so you will need a calculator.

Smash your calculator into four pieces, and on each piece write down one of the four teams. Put all four pieces into a hat, mix them up, close your eyes and pick one out.

That’s your 5A-9 runnerup.

Tick. Tick. Tick.

Tarpon Springs ran George Kotis out of town after a 10-3 season that ended in the region championship. The Spongers have already lost more games this season, and now people are actually thinking Wiregrass Ranch can beat them for the district title. I’m not one of them, but my confidence is wavering.

There is no way no way no way the Spongers don’t make the playoffs, but if they go as a district runnerup, well, who in Tarpon Springs would possibly be able to enjoy that?

Tick. Tick. Tick.
