Shorecrest's Brakeman invited to try out for U16 national team

Shorecrest's Marc Brakeman, the Times 2010 county pitcher of the year, was invited to try out for the 2010 under-16 national team.

The trials started last week in Woodlands, Texas, and continue through Saturday. Two teams will play against each other in six games starting Monday. On Tuesday, the teams will play at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

The list of 39 invitees will be whittled down to a final roster of 20 by the end of the trials. That team will head to Lagos de Moreno, Mexico, on Oct. 7 to play in the COPABE "AA" Pan-Am Youth Championships. The U16 National team has won the past five titles in its division.

Brakeman, a junior,  had a breakthrough season in 2010, leading the Chargers to the Class 2A state championship game against Miami Westminster Christian.
