Sickles signs six

Six Sickles seniors signed paperwork to continue their sports careers collegiately Wednesday.

Identical twins Sam and Jack Machonis, both on the Gryphons baseball team, signed with Polk State and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, respectively. Sam, who plays center field, leads Sickles (9-9) with a .356 batting average, 15 stolen bases, five doubles, two triples a home run and 14 RBIs. Jack, the shortstop, has contributed five stolen bases and 13 RBIs of his own.

Rounding out the male signees was Carlos Rodriguez, who is headed to Florida Southern to play soccer after leading the Gryphons with seven goals and five assists last season.

Softball players Brittany Johnson (Rollins College) Nichole Lewis, (Coastal Georgia) and Kaitlyn Ficarotta (Hillsborough Community College) signed as well. All are hitting above .300 for Sickles (12-6), and Johnson leads the Gryphons with 15 RBIs while Ficarotta has scored a team-high 12 runs.
