DADE CITY — Twice Amber Caudill missed the bunt-and-run sign from Pasco coach Lisa Herndon. It’s a good thing, otherwise she would not have come up with the clutch hit in a 4-1 win Tuesday over Class 5A, District 8 rival Zephyrhills.

Caudill’s two-run double on a full count with two out snapped a tie at 1 in the bottom of the third inning. Lizzy Burchfield and Jordan Lane scored before Caudill was thrown out trying to stretch her hit into a triple.

“We were trying to get the runner in from third and she didn’t realize we had the bunt-and-run on,” Herndon said. “Then their outfielders moved in and she did a good job.”

“It could have went either way,” Caudill said of her hit over the head of centerfielder Marissa Gochenour.

The Pirates avenged an 8-7 loss to the Bulldogs this season, a game in which Pasco blew a four-run lead.

“The kids don’t like to lose to Zephyrhills,” Herndon said.

Pasco (15-2, 10-2) added a run in the fifth on winning pitcher Vanessa Mills’ sacrifice fly that scored Kelli Parker, who singled. Parker also singled and scored on Jordan Lane’s single in the first.

Zephyrhills (12-8, 9-4) got its lone run in the top of the third when Ashley Seekins drew a one-out walk and scored on an infield error.
Mills (6-0) pitched a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts and four walks.
