The news about Pasco promoting Lisa Herndon to head softball coach has been circulating for months. But it had only been confirmed for public consumption Tuesday night.

Herndon has been assisting the Pirates for the better part of 10 years, first under Willie Broner then Ray Carver. She replaces Shamalene Broner, who resigned for undisclosed reasons.

Shamalene continues to teach at the Pasco, and trades e-mails with Herndon, who works at Pasco Middle.

"I miss her," Herndon said. "We'll do the best we can. ...I'm hoping it's just temporary."

Some at Pasco, including Herndon and athletic director Jim Ward, have indicated Shamalene could return at a later time.

Right now she has no involvement with the program, Herndon said.

Herndon, who has been a head volleyball coach at Pasco Middle, has plenty of work to do. Besides adjusting to Shamalene's absence she must tinker with the roster to find replacements for four seniors including Lucy Schneider and Colena Lazar

"We're going to be fine," Herndon said. "I've been coaching long enough to know how to coach in a game and how to run a practice."

Pasco has just one senior returning from last year's 23-7 team that lost 7-6 to Harmony in the Class 4A region semifinal round. Herndon is currently looking for home and away games and can be reached at (352) 524-8525.
