BRADENTON — Shorecrest struck first Thursday night, as Garrett Schulte went 68 yards on the first play from scrimmage, but Bradenton Christian responded and handed the Chargers a 41-28 loss.
Bradenton Christian coach Allan Gerber said his team had simple goals coming into the spring.
“We wanted our opponent to walk off the field to say that was a tough football team that played with great effort and great discipline,” he said.
Bradenton Christian bounced back from its early deficit with some tidy defensive plays, aside from a couple lapses, and an offense that kept Shorecrest off the field for most of the second half.
Panthers rising senior Avian Humphrey displayed his running ability with offensive lineman Josh Clark and Co. opening holes all night.
Humphrey tallied 132 yards on the ground with four touchdowns, including a 51-yarder that stretched the Panthers’ lead to 20 with 1:07 remaining in the third quarter.
Schulte also had a 70-yard rushing touchdown.
Also setting up the running lanes was rising senior Ryan Cobb, whose passing afforded Humphrey more room.
