Around the North Suncoast in 30 days

A daily spring preview of every football program in Hernando and Pasco counties

Coach: Matt Wicks (second season, 0-10)

Last season: 0-10

District: Class 3A-7 (Mitchell, Pasco, Land O’Lakes, Sunlake, Wesley Chapel, Zephyrhills)

Key losses: LB Brad Stewart (transfer to Largo)

Who’s back: FB Kris Aratchiysky, RB/LB Travis Hendrix, QB Phil Linton, G/NG Terry Linton, OL/DL Jason Janus, LB Terrell Martin, WR/DB Dondre Daley

What’s new: Wicks said the team needed an attitude adjustment, starting with its slogan for the upcoming season: “Nothing is given. Everything is earned.” Much of what is earned will start this week when the Sharks begin hitting and tackling drills, something the second-year program did not do in its first spring. Wicks said coaches are better prepared to evaluate players when they wear helmets and pads and see actual blocks and contact. One setback is Gulf transfer Ty’Shon Peters’ broken hand. Wicks said the injury occurred playing flag football. Peters is expected to be ready midway through spring and will compete for the starting quarterback job and a spot in the secondary. Also competing at quarterback are Phil Linton and freshman John Forgione.

Audible: “The attitude was everyone wanted to be a team (last year), but they didn’t know how to be a team. They wanted to wear a jersey and be part of something new, but they had baggage from other teams. They didn’t understand how we did it until now.”  — Wicks

Did you know? Anclote has 20 new kids who did not play football last season. In all, Wicks issued 48 sets of equipment. In terms of offseason conditioning, the Sharks had 25 players consistently at workouts. And in terms of the payoff, Wicks said he hopes Anclote will be able to win three games. “Three wins is realistic because three is more than we had last year. Even one win is more than we had last year.”
