A daily spring preview of every football program in Hernando and Pasco counties

Bishop McLaughlin

Coach: Matt Nardo (first season)

Last season: 3-7

District: Independent (Sunshine State Athletic Conference, Southern Division)

Key losses: None

Who’s back: QB/DB Mitch Ritter, RB/LB Giovanni Perone, FB/LB Isaac Myers, OT/DL Zack Lockhart, DB/WR A.J. Beeble, LB/RB Tiger Williams

What’s new: Former assistant Matt Nardo takes over for three-year coach Marty Williams. Though the Hurricanes will remain a veer team at heart, Williams, who stepped down Monday and will stay on as an assistant and athletic director, emphasized that he really wanted to open up the offense to accommodate the athleticism of his two star players. Giovanni Perone averaged 166 yards of total offense in the ’Canes three victories while Mitch Ritter rushed for more than 150 yards twice last season. While the program didn’t have a ton of success in 2009, it did win two of its last three games and hopes to carry that momentum into this campaign.

Audible: “We’re encouraged. We feel like we have a good squad coming back. We have Gio and Mitch to carry the water for us and speed on the edges.” — Williams

Did you know? The SSAC adds four programs to the mix in 2010, including Faith Baptist, Landmark Christian, Merritt Island Christian and St. Edward's. 2009 champion Canterbury jumped ship for districts, but dominant Carrollwood Day remains in the Southern Division. “We’re adding good established programs with established traditions, and of course, we’ve always got Carrollwood Day. (Patriots coach) Lane McLaughlin is a good coach at getting them prepared,” Williams said.
