Around the North Suncoast in 30 days

A daily spring preview of every football program in Hernando and Pasco counties

Central

Coach: Mike Einspahr (first season)

Last season: 1-9

District: Class 4A, District 5

Key losses: RB/DB Steven Read, QB/DB Artie Gartner, OT/DL Clifton Davis, RB/LB Zach Rice, LB Brody Judd, K/RB/LB Nick Rosario, WR/DB Joe Farace

Who’s back: QB/DE Josh Burkhart, LB/OL Josh Colon, OL/DL Zach Merrill, LB/TE Mike Bailey

What’s new: With the hiring of a new coach comes an influx of enthusiasm this program hasn’t seen in years. Former coach Cliff Lohrey only had 28 players on the roster going into the 2009 season and claimed that his 2007 team with 36 players was the largest squad in school history. Einspahr, who plans to implement a more balanced offensive system, had more than 70 kids on the field in his first week of spring camp. Einspahr already likes what he sees out of his incoming staff and players. Junior linebacker/running back Jeremy Williams, who didn’t play for the Bears last season, is one of the premier athletes in the area and looks primed to be a top contributor for Central.

Audible: “The teams we are going to go against are going to be fundamentally sound. We are going to have to be fundamentally sound as well.” — Einspahr

Did you know? Though the Bears technically went 1-9 last year, they didn’t win a game on the field. Their one victory came via forfeit when it was discovered West Port, which won 19-0, had used an ineligible player. …Even with a team with little depth last season and lot of injuries, Central lost most of its 2009 roster to graduation. The 2010 team will be mostly a clean slate for everyone involved. …Einspahr, who played defense in college, became an offensive mind once he entered coaching and has been there ever since. “I have a speed option background from my days at Northwest Missouri State, where we won a couple national championships,” he said, “but we’re going to throw the ball here, too. You have to be balanced if you want to win around here.”
