Around the North Suncoast in 30 days

A daily spring preview of every football program in Pasco and Hernando counties

Gulf

Coach: Jay Fulmer (fifth season, 31-22)

Last season: 6-4

District: Class 3A, District 7

Key losses: QB/LB Madison Burr, RB/LB Darryl Cooper, WR/RB David Ramirez, RB/DL Will Burbridge, DE/TE Leon Orr, QB Ty’Shon Peters, OL/DL George Kapetanis

Who’s back: RB/LB Austin Jackson, OL/DL Jeff Kruse, OL/DL Chris Palasky, QB/RB Phoenix Burr, WR/DB Julio Vega, OL/DL C.J. Hart, TE/DL Nikola Visic, K Travis Jehs

What’s new: Gulf will basically host open auditions this spring for several spots though the quarterback position seems settled. Will Fulmer, son of coach Jay Fulmer, is the front runner for the position by default. That’s because Peters, who appeared to be the top candidate after last season, transferred to Anclote. Jay Fulmer has tried to downplay his son’s role as the likely starter and has said he has enough pressure and needs few distractions.

Audible: “We’re a young rebuilding team. We’re pretty much new at everything — quarterback, new offensive line, new receivers, new running back, everything. We have a few proven guys. …We have a lot to find out about ourselves.” — Jay Fulmer

Did you know? In five years, Jay Fulmer has had just one losing season. After a 5-5 campaign in 2005, Fulmer picked up his first winning season in 2006 when the Buccaneers went 6-5, then the following year went 4-6. His best season was in 2008’s 10-2 campaign. Last year’s team went 6-4 and finished with a three-game win streak.
