Around the county in 30 days

A daily spring preview of every football program in Hillsborough County

Lennard

Coach: George Edington (third season, 7-12)

Last year: 3-6

District: Class 2A, District 5

Key losses: OL/DL Leroy Campbell, WR DeMyco Winston, OL Bobby Williams, OL/DL Andy Siegworth

Who’s back: RB Tevin Abney, QB Fred Porter, OG/MLB David Sanders, RB/OLB Greg Doss, RB/OLB Curtis Davis, CB T.J. Ebert, SS Kaylab Phillips, DT Abraham Esteva, DE Ben Tate

What’s new: The Longhorns have a lot of players with game experience back, especially on defense, where they return all three starting linebackers. Heading into the spring, one of Edington’s main concerns was shoring up both lines, but his offensive line has jelled. On the defensive front, he needs a player to clog the middle and allow his linebackers to make tackles, like the 6-foot-1, 260-pound Campbell did. That job will fall to 6-foot-3, 290-pound Jesus Orendain. On offense, Edington is impressed with Porter, who now knows Lennard’s spread system much better than last spring, when he had just transferred from East Bay’s wishbone attack. “He’s so much better with a year of experience,” Edington said. “He knows how to read defenses so much better.” Still, numbers are down; about 40 kids are practicing this spring, which means more juggling of players who will be forced to play on both sides of the ball.

Audible: “It’s made it a lot easier knowing what we have. Last year we had a lot of new faces. Fewer questions need to be answered. We all know where we’re going. Now we just need to make sure we stay healthy.” — Edington on having lots of returning players this spring

Did you know? Porter owns a 4.8 grade point average and has drawn interest from the likes of Harvard and Brown.
