Around the North Suncoast in 30 days

A daily spring preview of every football program in Hernando and Pasco counties:

Coach: Brian Wachtel (second season, 8-2)

Last season: 8-2

District: Class 3A, District 7

Key losses: QB Cody Van De Boe, OL Joe Crews, OL Ryan Brosnan, OL Jordan Indermuehle, FB Leigh Andre, RB Brandon Mundy, LB Dylan Lamb, LB Hunter McIntosh, LB Anthony Moore

Who’s back: RB Ricky Trinidad, QB Matt Michaels, WR Dylan Buono, RB Freddie Jones, LB Chris Collins, C Justin Buis, K/P Codi Folsom

What’s new: The biggest thing the Mustangs have to replace is the offensive line in front of returning county rushing leader Trinidad. No one questions the electric ability of Trinidad, but much of the 1,389 yards and 17 touchdowns he racked last season were attributed to the senior-laden offensive line. Wachtel is replenishing that line with new faces like LG Chris Schalles, LT Foster Artlit, RT Jesse Echeverria and RG Josh Gabel. Another complement to Trinidad will be backup tailback Jones. While Jones received playing time as a sophomore, he was the third running back with Mundy getting a lot of time on the field. With Mundy graduating, Jones will have to step to the forefront to spell Trinidad, especially if Trinidad gets injured again, as he did for a few games last season.

Audible: “Going into this spring, we focused on competition and consistency. That’s what our philosophy is, and that’s where we are now as a team.” — Wachtel

Did you know? Despite eight wins, the Mustangs were the odd team out in a three-horse district race last season when Pasco and Land O’Lakes each reached the postseason. Mitchell reached the state playoffs in 2004 with a record of 7-3. Last year’s win total was the most in program history. …Going into last season, Van De Boe was the incumbent quarterback, but a knee injury in the preseason game at Hudson sidelined him for the year. Michaels, playing wide receiver at the time, was thrown into the fire. He went on to have a terrific season as a junior with seven touchdown passes and three interceptions. He also ran for 435 yards and five touchdowns. He is expected to be one of the top signal callers in the county this season.
