Around the North Suncoast in 30 days

A daily spring preview of every football program in Hernando and Pasco counties

Pasco

Coach: Tom McHugh (fourth season, 27-9)

Last season: 9-2 (lost 36-25 to Lakewood in the region quarterfinals)

District: Class 3A, District 7

Key losses: K Brennan Allen, OL/DL Dan Brown, QB D.J. Clower, WR/DB Chaise Dunn, TE/LB Jake Foster, LB Chase Sellers, OL/LB Lee Wells, WR/DB Mitch Wozniak

Who’s back: OL/DL Devon Alexander, DB/LB Jamie Byrd, OL Kerry Carter, ATH Janarion Grant, WR/LB Trey Dudley-Giles, QB Jacob Guy, WR Hakeeme Ishmar, RB/DB Willie Jackson, OL/DL John Kilgannon, TE/LB Mark Landry, FB Clifford Phillips, OL/LB Sage Stephens, OL/DL Nick Wilson, OL/DL Chuck Wood

What’s new: One of the more significant losses was that of Clower, who spent the past two seasons under center. Guy is the Pirates’ choice to fill the void. Guy, a rising junior listed last season at 6-4, 180 pounds, appears to have all the tools of a successful quarterback. The Dade City resident transferred from Zephyrhills last year. He spent the summer working with Pasco’s seven-on-seven team before a hand injury benched him for a good portion of the fall. But he dedicated himself to being in position to battle for the starting job.

Audible: “It’s fine. It’s spring. The goal we had was to develop leadership and work on details. The difference between being good and very good is the small things. So when I first met with the coaches I told them to work on the details.” — McHugh

Did you know? Pasco has not had a losing season since McHugh’s arrival. In fact, the Pirates have won three straight district titles and are the likely favorites for a fourth. McHugh has the highest winning percentage among the past four coaches at Pasco, dating to Don Herndon in 1982. The most successful Pirates coach was Perry Brown, who guided Pasco to the 1992 Class 3A state title. Brown won 73.1 percent of his games with a 60-22 record during his seven seasons. McHugh has won 75 percent of his games and guided the Pirates to the Class 3A final four in 2008.
