Around the county in 30 days

A daily spring preview of every football program in Hillsborough County

Seffner Christian

Coach: Steve Lewis (first season; 26th season overall, 122-139-6)

Last season: N/A

District: None (SCA will play as a Class B independent)

Players to watch: DT Seth Lewis, QB Bradley Moorer, DE Cole Reichert, QB/RB Tanner Richardson, TE Garrett Saunders

What’s new: What isn’t new? The Crusaders began with roughly 40 kids for the program’s inaugural spring and finished with 35 — still a healthy number for a Class B program. Lewis, the former Temple Heights coach who spent last season as a Strawberry Crest assistant, says enough talent is in place to be competitive in Year 1, as evidenced by the spring game. Three of the Crusaders’ four completions against Seven Rivers went for touchdowns of 50 or more yards. “We’ve got a few boys out there who, I’d say, are natural in the game of football,” Lewis said. Watch for SCA to operate out of a double-wing, double-tight end set engineered by Moorer, point guard of the basketball team. Defensively, Seth Lewis — the coach’s son — started every game on the defensive line last season at Strawberry Crest.

Audible: “We’ve got everything in place. We trained all spring for one game and now what we have to do is keep talking to the kids about how much more work we have to do to train for a whole season. …The only thing that you can really control in the game of football, or anything for that matter, is your level of physical preparation. If we can get ourselves in good physical condition, we’ll have a chance to win a few games.” — Lewis

Did you know? Lewis, 59, said if his health holds out, he’d like to coach until he’s 70. “I had one more thing to do on my (bucket) list and that was to start a football program from scratch,” said Lewis, who coached Temple Heights until the school dropped grades 10-12 in 2006. …The objective is for Seffner Christian to move into an Florida High School Athletic Association district and become playoff eligible in 2011. …Seth Lewis is the youngest of Steve’s five boys.
