A daily spring preview of every football program in Pinellas County

St. Petersburg Catholic

Coach: Tod Creneti (fourth season, 10-20)

Last season: 5-5

District: Class 2A, District 5

Key losses: RB/DB Keelyan Bryant, OL/DL Tim Conti, OL/DL Daniel Cyrwus, OL/DL Tom Eckelkamp, OL/LB Cody LeClair, QB Chris McKay, OL/DL Paul Medling, WR/DB Julian Smith, RB/DB Derrick Snead, OL/DE Mike Yanchunis

Who’s back: QB/DB Jaquel Cooper, RB/DB Ryan Greene, WR/DL Evan Holmes, OL Russell Kelly, K/P Kevin Krueger, RB/DB Todd Macon, OL/DL Paul Mandley, QB/WR Tim McKay, OL Logan McKenna, OL/DL Tom Morris, RB/LB Jacob Zinge

What’s new: St. Petersburg Catholic displayed an aggressive, hard-hitting defense in its spring jamboree against Indian Rocks Christian and Seminole, and Creneti said he has a lot of confidence in that side of the ball entering the fall. Holmes is a terror on the defensive line, Zinge is the leader of the linebacking corps. Both rising seniors have been receiving plenty of recruiting attention. The secondary is young, but Creneti is pleased with its progress this spring. The Barons have plenty of depth at the skill positions. Cooper will take over as starting quarterback after serving as Chris McKay’s backup last season. His top target is the multi-talented Tim McKay, also the backup quarterback. Look for Javonte Fields and Rodney Adams to get their share of catches as well. Macon, Greene and Zinge all carried the ball effectively in the spring jamboree and will split the load in the backfield. Creneti said the group that grew the most during the spring was the offensive line. Morris, the starting center, has been a dedicated workout warrior during the offseason.

Audible: “We’re excited about the fall. Our kids have good chemistry, and we feel we have a chance to be pretty good.” — Creneti

Did you know? Holmes is the Barons’ most coveted recruit so far. He holds offers from Tulane, Youngstown State, Gardner-Webb and Elon.

Spring result: Defeated IRC 7-0, lost 13-0 to Seminole (played each team for one quarter)
