Around the county in 30 days
A daily spring preview of every football program in Hillsborough County
Coach: Floyd Graham (second season, 1-6; 10th season overall, 28-58)
Last season: 1-6 (includes varsity games only)
District: Class 2A, District 5
Key losses: None
Who’s back: LB Alex Bombino, QB Chris Carriere, RB Danny Fernandez, DB Tyler Mitchell, RB Kendall Pearcy, DL Nick Rivera, OG Christian Rossi
What’s new: Muscle and bulk. Graham, who started the Warriors program from scratch last year, says on average, his players gained 33 1/2 pounds in the offseason. At the least, the added weight should make Steinbrenner more competitive as it segues to a full varsity schedule. Graham hopes to complement his wing-T offense with some spread looks. When the Warriors do run, they’ve got a solid pulling guard in Rossi, who will be the lone senior up front. Graham’s also high on Plant transfer Alex Vega, a Panthers backup whose brother Jon started for the 5A state champs last season.
Audible: “I was real pleased with the way the kids worked out in the offseason. We started up (the offseason program) Nov. 9, the Monday after our last game, and didn’t stop until the first day of spring.” — Graham
Did you know? Four days a week in the offseason, the Warriors gathered before dawn for workouts in their weight room and on their field. Graham said some passers-by, oblivious to the Warriors’ training schedule, notified the school’s administration that the stadium lights had been left on from the night before.
