Around the county in 30 days

A daily spring preview of every football program in Hillsborough County

Strawberry Crest

Coach: Todd Donohoe (second season, 1-6)

Last year: 1-6

District: Class 2A, District 5

Key losses: None (As a first-year school this year, they have no seniors)

Who’s back: RB Tommy Herrara, WR/DB/KR Donnardo Fields, QB Brandon Reaves, OL Jake Jordan, FB Luis Trevino, DE/LB/DB Norman Hartman, MLB Daniel Wisnesky, DE Cory Fleihman, CB Guillermo Garcia

What’s new: The Chargers will play their first full varsity schedule after a mixed slate last year. And Donohoe says the team has grown by leaps and bounds since last season. Last year, just four players could bench more than 200 pounds. Now 35 can. New addition Robert Tirado’s debut as the defensive coordinator was impressive. The Crest allowed just 30 yards in a half during its spring game against Steinbrenner. Tirado was an assistant at Jesuit and Robinson, both district foes. “It’s a very attacking defense,” Donohoe said of the team’s primarily 4-3 defensive scheme. Herrara, a rising senior, averaged 5.5 yards a carry on offense, and Fields averaged 20 yards a catch. Donohoe says Wisnesky, who was hurt most of the year, is a playmaker who might be the team’s top defensive player.

Audible: “Our focus from day one has been to get better every day and that’s going to remain our focus until we get to the playoffs. It’s happening. We’re getting stronger and faster and bigger.” — Donohoe

Did you know? Part of Donohoe’s vision is bringing in as many people as he can who were part of Armwood’s winning tradition. He’s added two of the Hawks’ top quarterbacks — Justin Hickman and Jameel Williams — to coach QBs and help teach the same triple-option offense that won state titles in 2003 and ’04

Spring result: Strawberry Crest 9, Steinbrenner 3
