Around the North Suncoast in 30 days

A daily spring preview of every football program in Hernando and Pasco counties

Coach: Bill Browning (fourth season, 5-25; 21st season overall, 97-110)

Last season: 4-6

District: Class 3A, District 7

Key losses: DL Kyle Anderson, TE Brian Adams, DB Joe Connolly, DE Jacob Henderson, LB Leeroy Thompson, OL Dylan Lane

Who’s back: RB/DB Rashaud Daniels, QB/DB Jacob Jackson, LB/RB Alex Rodriguez, RB/DB Jamal Jones, LB Chason Connell, FB/DL Craig King, DL Elijah Martinez, OL Nate McCoole, LB Nick Morrison, OL Josh Nobles, OL/LB Matt Sanders, LB Kyle Fraser, DL Cannon Clark, P Adrian Krupka

What’s new: 2009 was the first multiple-win campaign in program history for the Seahawks, and with most of the roster returning this season, Browning plans to build on that success by opening up the passing game. The biggest key was the running game and emergence of rising junior Daniels (760 yards, nine touchdowns). By season’s end, opponents were putting eight or nine defenders in the box to offset the explosive tailback. “We need to be much more productive in the throwing game. Some of that was on Jacob (Jackson) being new to the system and some of that was on breakdowns in pass protection,” Browning said. Jackson had transferred from Gulf before his junior season.

Audible: “We still have a ways to go, but we fully expect to be a player in the district this season. Two years ago, we couldn’t have squashed a grape between two players. That’s not a knock on the kids that were here, but that’s what happens when you start a new program.” — Browning

Did you know? After long stints at Springstead and Hernando, Browning is knocking on the door of his 100th career victory this season. The Seahawks’ third win in 2010 will give him the milestone. He has previously led teams to playoffs in 1989, 1993, 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2002. “I really haven’t given it a lot of thought because, coming to a new school, you can throw wins and losses out the door,” Browning said. “The special wins are the ones you get for district titles and in the playoffs.”  …Daniels’ 164-yard, four-touchdown performance in an upset 35-14 win over Gulf last season was arguably the best ever by a Sunlake back. Only Mike Shaver has had more yards (204) in a loss to St. Cloud on Sept. 19, 2008, and no player has ever scored more touchdowns.
