A daily spring preview of every football program in Hillsborough County

Tampa Bay Tech

Coach: C.C. Culpepper (fourth season, 25-8)

Last year: 9-2 (Lost 47-20 to Countryside in region semifinals)

District: Class 5A, District 7

Key losses: RB Maurice Hagens, LB Greg Hickman, LB Sam Jones, DB Jerome Speights, DL Mark Grant, DT Frankie Fernandez

Who’s back: QB Jonathon Williams, RB Cludner Lacount, LB Tim Stewart, OL Devonte Danzey, LB Iryan Drummond

What’s new: A Titans team that was 8-1 in the regular season last year lost 23 seniors, but Culpepper is excited about the talent of his youth. In his four years at the helm, this will be the first class he sees through, and he says confidently that it is the fastest team he’s had at TBT. “If you go down position by position, we’re a lot faster everywhere,” he said. He credits that to an offseason program that concentrated on speed training and percentage lifting and saw 100 percent participation from his two-deep. “As a coaching staff, we wanted to create a little more discipline, and make sure they did more of their assignments instead of trying to make a play,” Culpepper said. “There’s a bit of fresh air because this is a young group and they’re very coachable.” The Titans return seven starters — four on offense and three on defense.

Audible: “I know that a lot of people thought we might fall off because we lost a lot, but if you look at the upper echelon of programs, the Armwoods and the Plants, year after year they’re great because they have talent in the JV program and they have kids who know what to expect.” — Culpepper

Did you know?  TBT’s JV program has been undefeated the past two seasons. “It’s not like we have a bunch of kids who don’t know the system. They know what the coaching staff expects and they expect to win,” Culpepper said.
