Around the North Suncoast in 30 days

A daily spring preview of every football program in Hernando and Pasco counties

Zephyrhills

Coach: Reggie Roberts (first season)

Last season: 2-8

District: Class 3A, District 7

Key losses: WR/DB Josh Geiger, RB/LB Michael Peterman, RB/LB Ben Williams, LB/FB Anthony Viernes

Who’s back: QB/DB Chris Reaves, QB/WR Jamal Roberts, OL/DL Duke Morrison, WR/DB Adrian Sanchez, OL/DL Stephen Cottrell, RB/CB Jacolby O’Neal (Pasco transfer)

What’s new? Roberts hopes to use his personal experience as a Zephyrhills player in the 1980s to bridge the gap to today’s Bulldogs. He was brought in to revive the spirit of the team, as well as its once winning reputation. He’ll oversee the entire operation, but specifically Roberts is coaching the defensive backs. So far he says his biggest obstacle has been trying to restore Bulldog pride. Roberts said he has reached out to the middle school athletes interested in becoming Bulldogs, and he encourages his players to support Zephyrhills’ other sports teams through attendance.

Audible: “The idea of sitting in Tom Fisher’s old office and returning to Zephyrhills High School, I wasn’t lying when I said it was a dream. Sometimes I walk in here and I still can’t believe it. When I walk out in the locker room and all eyes are on me, it’s reality now. It’s time to get to work. …My challenge has been re-energizing that spirit.” — Roberts

Did you know? Zephyrhills expects Reaves to be its starting quarterback this fall. But because Reaves briefly enrolled at Land O’Lakes before returning to Zephyrhills, he is ineligible to play in Friday’s spring game against Pasco. Reaves threw for 408 yards, two touchdowns and an interception last season. Pasco transfer O’Neal also is ineligible for the spring game. Both have been allowed to practice this spring.

Spring game: at Pasco, 7 p.m. Friday
