Springstead graduate Virgil Toms has landed on his feet when it comes to wrestling at the next level, signing with Campbellsville University (Ky.) recently.
Toms, 18, who graduated from Springstead this past summer, narrowed his choices to Notre Dame College of Ohio, Midland (Neb.), and Campbellsville, but the NAIA program came to forefront after he visited the campus and spoke to coaches.
Former Springstead wrestler Scott Wern signed with the Tigers two years ago out of high school after becoming a state finalist under Eagles coach Eric Swensen. State champion Shawn Landgraff also considered Campbellsville before choosing Limestone (S.C.).
Toms, who began his prep career at Forest, transferred to Springstead and immediately rose to another level, competing in some phenomenal bouts with Brandon All-American Rossi Bruno last season. He went 46-3 as a senior and 171-25 overall in his four seasons as a varsity grappler. The 171 wins would make him the winningest wrestler in Springstead history if he had competed for the program his entire career.
