There are two regulars missing from Springstead’s lineup for the Ippolito Tournament. One of those two grapplers won’t be returning for the remainder of this season.
Andrew Herr (189 pounds) turned in his gear to the Springstead staff this week after he was ruled academically ineligible. Herr, a junior, was a key member of the Eagles lineup for much of the season, winning individual titles at the Kiwanis Invitational and Springstead Invitational.
“Andrew needs to focus on his academics now,” Springstead coach Eric Swensen said. “We’ll work hard to move on without him.”
The Eagles plan to replace Herr (23-7) in the postseason lineup with sophomore Thomas Gupton. Gupton is 2-0 in limited time this season.
Nick Soto (130 pounds), a state runnerup last season, hyper-extended his right knee during last weekend’s Flagler Invitational. After seeing a doctor, the junior will be held out of this weekend’s tournament for precautionary reasons. Swensen expects Soto, who is 35-0 this season, to return for the Eagles’ postseason run in two weeks.
“I’ll let all of the kids out of practice a little earlier next week,” Swensen said. “It will be good opportunities to let all of their bodies recover before district.”
