St. Petersburg hired former Tampa Bay Devil Ray Travis Phelps as its baseball coach Tuesday.

Phelps was selected by the Devil Rays (now Rays) in the 89th round of the 1996 amateur draft and became the lowest draft pick ever to make a big-league roster. He pitched for the Devil Rays from 2001-02 and the Milwaukee Brewers in 2004. He played in the Independent Atlantic League in 2008 and signed a minor-league contract with the Detroit Tigers in 2009. He was released by the Tigers at the end of spring training in '09.

Phelps takes over the Green Devils from Daniel Breece, who coached for two seasons and led St. Petersburg to a district title in 2009.
