St. Petersburg Times all-Hillsborough County boys swim team

Boys swimmer of the year
Chris Swanson, Jr., Jesuit

Why we picked him: Expected to be one of the top swimmers in the county this season, Swanson didn’t disappoint. He posted the highest finish of any Hillsborough swimmer at state this season by finishing fourth in the Class 2A 500-yard freestyle in 4 minutes, 36.49 seconds and fifth in the 200 freestyle in 1:41.50. He was also a part of an exceptional 200 free relay that posted the county’s highest overall boys finish.

Proudest accomplishment: While the individual success was nice, Swanson was most excited about two performances with his 200 free relay. The first came at the City Relays, when he swam a 47.3-second leg in a comeback victory. The second was at the Class 2A state meet, where he swam the final leg behind John Simon, Chase Goodwin and Thompson Marston to finish second in 1:28.68.

Did you know? Swanson broke his left elbow when he was 11 years old falling down a flight of slippery stairs. The doctors told his mother he would have to find a new sport because he would never swim again. Undeterred, Swanson had surgery and said he was back in the pool about five weeks afterward.  He also had sinus surgery in January.

What’s next:  Swanson will travel with the Tampa Bay Aquatic club to meets at the University of Michigan and in Palo Alto, Calif., before his senior season.

Coach of the year
Bill Shaffer, Jesuit/Academy of the Holy Names
While leading Jesuit boys to another successful season — district and region titles — was certainly no small feat, it was the dominance of Shaffer’s Holy Names girls squad that truly set him apart this season. The Jaguars also won their district and region meet and captured Hillsborough County’s only state title in the 200-yard freestyle relay (Paige Russell, Tori Litschgi, Konner Brewer and Clare Fleming).
