St. Petersburg fullback Ben Sams decided to bypass the Division I-AA and Division II route to be a preferred walk-on at the University of Florida, Green Devils coach Joe Fabrizio said.

Sams, a bruising back who was a first-team, all-county selection, powered his way for 878 yards and 14 touchdowns last season and led St. Petersburg to a berth in the Class 5A region semifinals.

A student in the International Baccalaureate program, Sams has a 4.4 GPA and is already qualified at UF.
