Academy of the Holy Names senior Emmy Martin fell short of her state championship goal in Wednesday’s Class 2A golf tournament.

She had to settle for her best result on the state’s biggest stage.

The TCU commit shaved three strokes off Tuesday’s round to finish the two-day event with 5-over 149, good enough for eighth place among the 94 individuals. Martin’s 1-over round was scarred by a quadruple bogey on the back nine, but she recovered to pick up a few more birdies on her way in.

“Some kids would fold up their tents…” AHN coach Chris Kumka said. “To her credit, she stuck with it.”

Martin improved on last year’s 15th-place showing and finished five shots behind champion Nicolette Donovan of Ponte Vedra.

Martin’s Jaguars finished one stroke from a top-five finish but claimed sixth at 663 at Mission Inn Resort and Club at Howey-in-the-Hills. Senior Casey Pluchino had AHN’s next best score at 160, followed by Mariah Diaz (171) and Georgia Ruffolo (183).

Jesuit’s boys had the best team finish in Hillsborough County, placing fourth in 2A at 646. Senior Joseph Trim and sophomore Matthew Ruel finished tied for 24th at 15 over, and junior Kurt Sierra was two shots behind to lead the Tigers.

Individual qualifier Andrew Skora of Robinson finished tied for 73rd at 42 over.

In Class A, junior Nilo Sanchez led Tampa Catholic with 6-over 150 to finish tied for 20th at Deer Island Country Club in Tavares. Teammates Ryan Williams and Lucas Mylet both finished within 15 strokes of par to help the Crusaders place 10th as a team.

Cambridge Christian sophomore Alison Armstrong was the top finisher at the girls tournament at Harbor Hills Country Club in Lady Lake. Her 14-over total tied her for 32nd.

Tampa Prep missed a top-10 finish by 17 strokes, claiming 11th. Sixth grader Lilly Berry had the Terrapins’ best result with 25-over 169. Senior Olivia Kresic was seven shots behind Berry.

Berkeley Prep took 14th as a team, behind junior Elaine Donigan (41 over, 69th place) and freshman Samantha Lee (42 over, 71st).

North Suncoast
The Saddlebrook boys team didn’t celebrate when it returned home from the Class A state finals — even though the Spartans turned around a disappointing first-day finish to tie for fourth place on Day 2 at Deer Island Country Club in Tavares.

“We played today how we’ve been playing,” coach Mark Hirschey said. “We just had a bad first day.”

The team shot 308 on the first day for seventh place, then followed with 292 on Wednesday.  Sophomore Ryoto Furuya shot 2 under to lead his team for a two-day total of 73-69—142, which tied him for sixth. Melbourne Holy Trinity’s Kerry Sweeney took home medalist honors with 67-69—136. Lake Mary Prep was the overall boys team champ (580).

The first-day finish motivated the team, the coach said.

“I was proud of the way they came back (Wednesday),” Hirschey said. “They didn’t think about not playing their best or about quitting.”

In Class 2Am the Mitchell boys finished sixth at Mission Inn Resort & Club at Howey-in-the-Hills with a score of 663, 62 shots behind winner Ponte Vedra.

Mitchell shot 328 on the second day after Tuesday’s 335. Mike Springer led the Mustangs, tying for 21st after 76-82—158, 17 shots behind champion Taylor Funk of Ponte Vedra.

The Mitchell girls finished 10th (742). Champion Plantation American Heritage shot 591. Shyanne Dove led the Mustangs with 93-86—179 to place 50th. Ponte Vedra’s Nicolette Donovan was the individual champ at even par (144).

Land O’Lakes took 15th with a score of 847, led by Estefania Guizar (72nd, 56 over).

Sunlake’s Jake Roberts and Kelly Harris competed as individuals. Roberts shot 10 over on both days to tie for 34th. Harris shot 32-over 176 to tie for 46th.

Springstead’s Brazon Dixon (47th, 25 over) and Kylie Van Meter (66th, 49 over) rounded out the North Suncoast results.

Shorecrest sophomore Greyson Porter had the best day of any county golfer at the Class A state tournament at Deer Island Country Club in Tavares on Wednesday.

Porter’s even-par 72 helped give him a two-day total of 74-72—146, good enough to tie for 15th.

Teammate Karim Oliver shot 81 on Wednesday for an overall score of 16-over 160, which tied for 59th in the 95-player field.

Kerry Sweeney of Melbourne Holy Trinity won the boys tournament with 8-under 136. Lake Mary Prep was the team winner with a two-day total of 580.

Clearwater Central Catholic junior Emma Paschal shot a second-round 80 in the girls’ Class A tournament at Harbor Hills Country Club in Lady Lake. Paschal’s two-day total was 77-80—157 to tie for 28th.

“I had trouble managing the course today,’’ Paschal said. “The greens were super fast and I had trouble reading them. I pushed some shots off the green. It’s a learning experience. The problem today was that there was more bad than good.’’

As a sophomore, Paschal shot 81-84—165 and tied for 39th. She improved on that showing and has one more chance next season for a high finish at state.

“I told her she proved this time around that she can compete with anyone out there,’’ CCC coach Tony Pasquine said.

Shannon Aubert of Hobe Sound Pine School won the girls tournament with 6-under 138. She won a playoff with first-round leader Abbey Carlson of Winter Park Circle Christian. Circle Christian was the team winner with a two-day total of 587, three shots better than Lake Mary Prep.
