State golf roundup: Fivay's Padova improves on finish from a year ago

Fivay junior Austin Padova had another outstanding outing at the Class A state golf tournament Wednesday to match his opening-round performance.

Padova was 2 over on the final day at the Country Club at Silver Springs Shores in Ocala, finishing 71-74—145. But Padova’s 1-over-par performance wasn’t quite enough to keep pace with the leaders.

Padova finished in a five-way tie for 15th overall. Collin Engelhardt of Trinity Prep and A.J. Crouch of Bolles were each 5 under through 36 holes. Engelhardt won the individual title after defeating Crouch in a playoff.

“That was a really good couple of rounds for Austin,” Fivay coach Eric Kruck said. “He had a great season. To be able to make it back to states two years in a row is really great.”

Padova, who qualified for state last season as a sophomore at Ridgewood, was 11 strokes over par a year ago.

Wednesday, Padova started his round with bogey but quickly got back to even par with a birdie three holes later. Padova remained even through the front nine, but after the turn, he dumped a tee shot on a par 3 into a water hazard and double bogeyed the hole, which kept him from contending for the title.

Wesley Chapel was three strokes better as a team over the final round of action.

Brandon Mumaw had the Wildcats’ lowest score on Wednesday, firing 3-over 75. Jacob Fleck posted 76, the same score he shot Tuesday. Matt Wynne shaved five strokes off his round on Tuesday to add 83 to the Wildcats’ total. Noah Fleck had 90 to complete the Wildcats’ team score of 324.

Wesley Chapel finished 15th out of 16 teams. Saddlebrook took 27 strokes off its team score from the opening round to post 321 on Wednesday. That score still wasn’t enough to keep the Spartans out of last place.

Saddlebrook seniors Alex Bensahel and Adam Chowdhari each came into the clubhouse 3 over to lead the Spartans with 75s. Fellow senior Jordi Torrent also broke into the 70s. He showed a 12-stroke improvement from his opening round with 78. Justin Bell, a sophomore, shot 93 for the Spartans’ fourth score.

Class 2A girls: Springstead’s Megan Berube was the top individual finisher among North Suncoast golfers. Berube, a sophomore, placed 14th at the Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club in Ocala. She followed Tuesday’s 83 with 2-over-par 74 to end the tournament 13 over.

Class A girls: Lauren Riehle of Saddlebrook matched her score from the opening round, shooting 80 at Ocala Golf Club to place 37th. Riehle was 16 over for the tournament.
