Boca Ciega junior Dan Stefan won his first-round singles match Monday at the Class 3A state tournament at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs.

As the top seed in the individual tournament, Stefan received a bye in the first round. He then defeated Reece Acree of Pensacola Booker 6-4, 6-2.

Stefan will play a semifinal match this morning. If he wins the individual singles tournament today, he would play in the overall singles final Wednesday morning (matching up against the team bracket’s No. 1 singles champ).

Stefan also teamed with Dustin Green in the individual doubles tournament. They won their opening match 6-3, 6-4, then lost in the second round 6-1, 6-1 to Naples Gulf Coast’s Christopher Barrus and Billy Shisler.

In Class 3A girls tournament, Osceola’s Jade Smith won her first-round match by default when Leesburg’s Janelle Taylor failed to show. In the second round, Smith lost 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 to Fort Myers’ Thandiwe Kangwa. The third set was played as a pro set (first player to 10 points).

Smith also teamed with her sister, Jayla, in the individual doubles tournament. The Smiths defeated King’s Rachael Adler and Sneha Sathish 3-6, 6-4, 12-10, then lost to Lakewood Ranch’s Ashley Bongart and Lindsey Rechcigl 3-6, 6-1, 10-3 in the second round.
