State tennis: Land O'Lakes pair falter in 3A semifinals

Land O’Lakes senior Colin Roller’s high school career ended Thursday when he and freshman David Dollbaum fell in the Class 3A doubles state semifinals at Altamonte Springs.

“Got unlucky, I guess,” said Roller, an East Carolina recruit.

Roller and Dollbaum rallied in the quarterfinals after facing two set points and trailing 5-4 in the first set against Lakeland’s Danny Mack, a UNC-Greensboro recruit. The district champion Gators recovered to take the first set 7-6, and a 6-2 second set victory pushed them into the semifinals.

Land O’Lakes won four of the first five games against Cypress Lake and claimed the first set before faltering after that.

“The second set was the complete opposite,” said Roller, who fell in the singles semifinal Wednesday as the No. 1 seed.

The Gators fell behind 4-1 in the second and dropped it 6-3. Roller and Dollbaum trailed 5-1 in the final set before stealing three games in a row to keep their hopes alive.

But Cypress Lake served out the set to end Land O’Lakes’ season.
