The stadium scoreboard clock at Steinbrenner High School read 2:13, the exact second when the Warriors girls soccer team won the school's first state championship in any sport.
The Warriors claimed the Class 4A state title Saturday at University of Tampa's Pepin Stadium with a 2-1 overtime win over defending champ Merritt Island. And on Monday afternoon, the school held a pep rally for Steinbrenner's first state champs.
The entire student body, more than 2,000 students, attended the event, as was county athletic director Lanness Robinson. Representatives from the Tampa Yankees were there to accept a state gold medal on behalf of the Steinbrenner family.
Warriors senior Carly Keene (on left above, with fellow Steinbrenner team captains Marissa Maries, Lauren Laughlin and Cici Gonzalez) scored on a header off Laughlin's dramatic flip throw-in with 2:13 left in the first sudden-death overtime to win.
