Steinbrenner took care of two of its coaching openings this week, promoting offensive coordinator Andres Perez to head football coach and hiring 24-year-old Laura Stegenga from Gaither to fill the volleyball slot.
The pair replaces Floyd and Jennifer Graham, who both resigned June 5 to return home to Wetumpka, Ala., to care for his mother and maternal grandfather, both of whom have cancer.
“I applied like 30 minutes after it came up,” said Stegenga, who coached Gaither’s JV team the past two years. “This is my dream job. I’m so excited and want to be here forever. Between the teaching position and coaching, I could not be happier.”
Stegenga spent last year teaching second grade in Hillsborough County and will teach physical education and health at Steinbrenner. She has six years of coaching experience (she started when she was 18) and coaches the 17-and-under Tampa Elite club volleyball team, where she was named USA Volleyball’s Florida Region Outstanding Coach, according to the club’s website.
Perez, 30, takes over the program Graham started in 2009. The Warriors finished 7-3 last season, remaining in playoff contention until late October.
