Tarpon Springs tight end/defensive lineman Mitchell Wilcox picked up first offer from James Madison on Wednesday, Spongers coach Ron Hawn said.

Mitchell, a 6-foot-4, 225 pound junior developed into a dependable target in the red zone and came on as pass rusher last season.

On offense, Mitchell finished with six catches for 100 yards, including three for touchdowns. He also had 23 tackles and six sacks on defense. Five of those sacks came in the last three games of the season as the Spongers made the playoffs as a district runnerup and advanced to the Class 5A region semifinals.

James Madison won a Division I-AA title in 2004. Former players who went on to NFL stardom include Charles Haley (49ers, Cowboys) and Gary Clark (Redskins).
