Shawn Smith's immortality lasted 27 years.
Smith, who set a Florida single-game rushing record with 501 yards in a 1985 triumph against East Bay, had his mark eclipsed by a yard Friday night. According to reports from northwest Florida, Yulee High's Derrick Henry ran for 502 in a 45-28 win against Jacksonville Jackson.
Smith was a 5-foot-11, 195-pound senior when he reached his surreal stratosphere in a 40-19 win against the Indians. He later attended Louisville briefly (never lettering) before returning to Tampa.
"Someone's going to come along and get it," Smith told the Times in 2005. "I don't know when though. I left a pretty good mark. I think it's something fun."
