Stanford likes big, strong running backs, and its latest, 6-foot-1, 235-pound Heisman Trophy finalist Toby Gerhart, is a prime example.

And the Cardinal has taken notice of Tampa Catholic fullback Hunter Joyer. At 6-foot, 240-pounds, he definitely fits the mold.

Stanford made Joyer a verbal offer on Wednesday, Joyer's father Jack said. Cardinal assistant Randy Hart, a longtime college assistant who started his coaching career at University of Tampa in 1972, called TC coach Bob Henriquez with the offer.

It's Joyer's second offer. He also owns an offer from Louisville, where his older brother Kamran plays, and also has received interest from Florida, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Ohio State, Purdue, Cincinnati, USF, Central Michigan and N.C. State.

But given Stanford's football program as well as academic reputation, Jack Joyer said the Cardinal have to be a favorite right now.

Florida State was also interested in Joyer, but wants him to drop to 220 pounds, which Jack Joyer said takes them out of consideration for now.
