Tampa Prep guard/team captain Jamal Cherry, who helped guide the Terrapins to the Class 2A state finals in March, will walk on at Ivy League power Cornell, Coach Joe Fenlon announced.
Cherry, who likely could've started for the Division III programs that recruited him, had his sights on an Ivy League education, Fenlon said. An honor student who scored a 1300 on his SAT, Cherry will receive an unspecified academic financial-aid package to Cornell.
"He is a very bright, goal-oriented young man who will accomplish great things in life," Fenlon said. "Obviously the opportunity to play basketball at a school that made the Sweet 16 is a very attractive thing as well."
The 6-foot-4 Cherry averaged 13 points and 2.5 assists last season for Tampa Prep (27-5), which fell to Jacksonville Providence in the 2A final.
Another graduating Terrapins guard, Jordan Heath, appears to stand a better chance at earning a spot on the program he'll join. Fenlon confirmed Heath will walk on at USF, where his dad Stan is coach.
