Hillsborough High’s venerable coach Earl Garcia proudly sent two more players to college with football scholarships on national signing say. Earl Moore and Anthony Brown signed with the University of Miami and Purdue, respectively.
Moore, a 6-foot-2, 285-pound defensive tackle, adds to an acclaimed Miami recruiting class that includes Antonio Crawford of Plant and Tyriq McCord from Jefferson. A tireless two-way player, he recorded more than 100 tackles the past two seasons combined, according to Garcia.
Miami was barely on Moore’s list in April, but a summer camp visit and subsequent invitation to a scrimmage pushed the Hurricanes ahead of FSU.
“I wasn’t really sure. Then (at the scrimmage) I got to hang around the players, the other recruits. ... Something about it that felt right.”
Miami coach Al Golden impressed him as well.
“He definitely rubs off on you. He makes you want to do great,” Moore said.
Brown (6 foot, 175 pounds) is a track star who has third-place finishes in the 100- and 200-meter events at the 2011 state finals on his resume. The Terriers coaching staff utilized him at a variety of positions in all phases of the game this past season. He recorded 12 rushing touchdowns and 866 yards as the team’s primary ballcarrier. On defense, he notched 25 tackles and two interceptions, along with being the primary kick returner. He will join a very similar player Purdue recruited last year in Robinson’s Frankie Williams.
Brown revealed that he might not necessarily be on the defensive side of the ball for the Boilermakers.
“It’s not set in stone. He (Purdue coach Danny Hope) asks me the same question every time: ‘What do I want to play?’ I don’t know. I told him whatever gets me on the field, I’ll play whatever. Offense, defense, special teams.”
Brown will compete in track and field this spring at Hillsborough. He hasn’t decided yet whether he will run for Purdue’s track team, but Hope gave him the go-ahead if he so chooses.
Hillsborough also honored Alisha Espinosa and Jack Murphy at the signing ceremony Wednesday morning. Murphy, who touts a weighted GPA of 6.0, will also be heading to Coral Gables. He earned a tennis scholarship from Miami.
Espinosa signed her letter of intent to play soccer for Southeastern University in Lakeland.
