Times’ all-Hillsborough County girls soccer

Player of the year: MF Karli Gutsche, Jr., Newsome
Why we picked her
: Gutsche was the most valuable player on the county’s best team. She led the Wolves and ranked among the county’s leaders with 20 goals while adding four assists. Gutsche’s physical style of play also made her the focal point of a Newsome defense that allowed only eight goals all season. “She prevented a lot of things from coming down the pipeline,” coach Kelly Townsend said.
Proudest accomplishment: Gutsche’s biggest point of pride is her team’s success. The Wolves won their second district title in three seasons and were perfect before falling to Lakeland George Jenkins in penalty kicks in the Class 5A region semifinals. “The undefeated (regular) season was phenomenal,” Gutsche said. Her coach credits Gutsche for much of that success. With only two seniors, Newsome looked go Gutsche to become the vocal leader from the beginning of the season. “She pretty much put everybody on her back and got everyone on the same page and said, this is it,” Townsend said.
Future plans: Gutsche committed to UCF earlier in her prep career but decommitted after the Knights’ coach left for UCF. Gutsche then selected Auburn and intends to sign with the Tigers next year. “I see the SEC and how hard it is,” Gutsche said. “I wanted to be in it.” She plans to study elementary education.
Did you know? Gutsche’s older sister, Karina, was the Times’ player of the year in 2011 and led the Wolves to a top-five national ranking. Karina is a junior center back at Florida. …Soccer has already taken Gutsche around the world. Gutsche has played in Germany, Costa Rica and the Czech Republic through the Olympic Development Program. That gave her the opportunity to travel to Europe as a teenager. “It was scary,” Gutsche said. “Now I feel like I can take on anything.”

Coach of the year: Kelly Townsend, Newsome. Youth was no problem for Townsend’s Wolves. Newsome had only two seniors but still rolled through the regular season undefeated before falling to Lakeland George Jenkins in the region semifinals. Don’t be surprised if the Wolves compete for a state title next winter.
