Track and field: Northside girls win sixth straight district title; AFA streak snapped by SPC

ST. PETERSBURG — Northside Christian girls track coach Jeff Goodwin is trying to savor this postseason as he contemplates the final year with one of his deepest, most talented senior classes in memory.

It was quite the moment at Friday’s Class A, District 10 meet as five seniors scored the majority of the Mustangs’ 186 points to win the team title for the sixth straight season.

“They’ve been big for us all season,” Goodwin said. “It’s going to be sad to see them leave.”

Katelyn Greenleaf, a distance specialist, led Northside’s 2012 class by winning the 800 meters (2:21.07), the 1600 (5:28.22) and teaming with Sarah Schultz, Ashley Johnson and Haley Gossard to win the 4x800 (10:11.60).

The seniors were not finished. Asia Olds won the 100 (12.40) and 200 (25.75). Victoria Goodwin won the 300 hurdles (48.53) and Shultz won the triple jump (33-10¼). Goodwin, Olds and Shultz teamed with another senior, Ashley Johnson, to win the 4x400 (4:15.53). The only event the Mustangs won that didn’t include seniors was the 4x100, where Deandra Tsaffaras, Briana Meehan, India Steinbaugh and Ariana Taylor won in 52.46.

Admiral Farragut freshman Brittany McGee, who came back from shin splints, had a stellar meet, winning the long jump (17-10½), high jump (4-10) and 100 hurdles (15.30). Teammate Claudia Pizzarell won the discus (87-09). The other county athlete to win an individual was Canterbury’s Rachel Valentine in the 3200 (12:02.95).

While Northside’s girls kept their title streak alive, Admiral Farragut’s boys saw theirs end.

St. Petersburg Catholic’s boys, thanks to a strong performance in the sprints and field events, scored 151 to beat Northside Christian by six. The Blue Jackets finished third, marking the first time in 12 years they did not win a team title.

Ryan Green was the big point-scorer for the Barons with wins in the 100 (10.87) and 200 (22.73). He also finished second in the high jump (5-8) and teamed with Todd Macon, Logan Bonfield and Chris White to win the 4x100 in 44.34.

SPC’s other champions were Bonfield in the high jump (6-10), Nick Muth in the pole vault (12-0), Todd Macon in the long jump (21-4½) and Michael Rusnak in the 400 (50.38).

The Mustangs’ Mario Ojeda won the 800 (2:00.48) and teamed with Matthew Montanari, Lucio Ojeda and Joe Chapman to win the 4x400 (3:30.86) and 4x800 (8:23.97) relays. Northside’s other winner was Jeffrey Golden in the triple jump (42-0½).

Keswick Christian’s Jacob Endrulat won the 1600 (4:37.07) and 3200 (10:21.61). The county’s other individual champions were Canterbury’s Chris Olson in the discus (133-4), Keswick’s Taylor Angell in the shot put (40-01) and Admiral Farragut’s Dontae McGee in the 110 hurdles (15.75).
