ST. PETERSBURG — The St. Petersburg City Championships were highlighted by fresh faces determined to make their mark on the inaugural track meet.

No one left a more lasting impression than Admiral Farragut freshman Brittany McGee.

In her first county meet, McGee won three events, finishing first in the long jump (18 feet, ½ inch), the high jump (5-4) and the 100 hurdles (15.15 seconds).

Her mark in the long jump is a half-inch off the state’s best this season regardless of classification. McGee’s time in the 100 hurdles is two-tenths of a second off the state’s top time, and she is 2 inches off the state’s best mark in the high jump.

“Brittany already is someone to watch for the next couple of years,” Blue Jackets track adviser Phil Barnhill said. “She already is up there in contention for state medals.”

McGee almost swept her events. In the 300 hurdles, she had a sizeable lead before faltering and losing to Northside Christian’s Victoria Goodwin by less than a second.

Goodwin was among four Mustang girls who won. Others were Sara Schultz in the 800 (2:30.35), Asia Olds (200, 26.37) and Katelyn Greenleaf (1600, 5:19.24) and (3200, 11:51.65). Northside won the 4x100 and 4x400 and scored in nearly every event. That depth helped the Mustangs win the title with 164 points.

“This was a meet we were really geared up to win,” Northside coach Jeff Goodwin said. “We were already ahead by a lot but we were still focused at the end, especially in the 4x400 relay.”

The Lakewood boys won with 115 points. The Spartans had three individual champions — Shaquem Griffin in the triple jump (46-1.5), Dante Fowler in the shot put (46-10.5) and Tim Holmes in the 300 hurdles (43.72). Lakewood also took first in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

There were several boys who won multiple titles. Gibbs’ Trayvon Bromell won the 100 and 200. Boca Ciega’s Kinard Davis won the long jump and 400. And Northside’s Mario Ojeda won the 800, 1600 and ran a leg on the winning 4x800.
