HOLIDAY — Running on his home track, Anclote’s Argishti Gazari was a triple winner in Thursday’s Sunshine Athletic Conference championships. The senior won the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter races.

Still, those victories were not enough to ward off Land O’Lakes, which tallied 159.5 points to claim the boys title over runnerup Anclote (107). Wiregrass Ranch (89), last season’s boys champion, took third.

In the girls division, Wiregrass Ranch (137) made it four straight SAC crowns. Mitchell (97.5) was runnerup, followed by Ridgewood (81.5).

“Today I just felt a little bit different,” Gazari said. “Mentally, I was prepared.”

Anclote coach Alan Parmenter congratulated his standout distance runner for making his prediction come true.

“I told him he was going to win all three (races),” Parmenter said. “I knew he was going to do it.”

Nikita Shah did not quite live up to Gazari’s feat, but she came close. The Wiregrass Ranch junior helped led her team by winning the 1,600 and 3,200. Her goal is to keep winning both races through districts and regionals, and medal in those distances at state.

“I was really running to win,” Shah said. “I wouldn’t say it was tough for me, but I wouldn’t say it was extremely difficult either.”

As has been the case in most distance runs, as well as cross country races the past two seasons, Shah and Gulf’s Kari Grippo were the top runners. Grippo, however, fell noticeably off the pace before the midway mark of the 3,200.

“The second lap I said, ‘Do something,’ and (Shah) just took off and left (Grippo),” Wiregrass Ranch coach Don Howard said.

As for the winning Gators, first-year coach Bill Schmitz credited depth and having a well-balanced team.

“We’ve got pretty good athletes,” Schmitz said. “We scored in every event. It was just a great effort all across the board.”
