PINELLAS PARK — A week after winning the St. Petersburg City championships, Lakewood’s boys track team came through again with a team title Friday at the Richard Allen Relays.

Much like the previous week, the Spartans’ toughest competition came from Boca Ciega.

The Pirates, who won four events to Lakewood’s two, would have won had they not been disqualified in the 4x100 relay after a muffed exchange. That gave the Spartans just enough to outscore Boca Ciega, 75-68.5.

“We knew Boca Ciega was going to be right there with us,” Lakewood coach Anthony Snead said. “They had some slipups. But we did, too. I think we’re starting to come around.”

Shaquem and Shaquille Griffin helped the Spartans win the long jump by nearly 2 inches over the Pirates. Lakewood also took first in the 4x800 and 4x400 relays.

Boca Ciega, led by Kinard Davis, won the high jump, 4x200, shuttle hurdle and 1000 sprint relays.

But it was not enough to match the depth of the Spartans, who placed in the top three in all but one event.

“We have a lot of guys that people know who did well, but some others stepped up, too,” Snead said. “Those under-the-radar type guys really helped us win.”

The other boys champions were Countryside in the distance medley, East Lake in the 4x100 and Dunedin in the shot put and discus relays.

On the girls side, Osceola had the numbers to get past host Pinellas Park 60-56.

Alexis Irwin helped the Warriors win the 4x800 and distance medley. Osceola also was strong in the field events, taking first in the high jump, pole vault and discus relays.

The Patriots’ only win came in the shot put relay. Lakewood, which finished third overall, won four events, the 4x100, 4x200, 1000 sprint and shuttle hurdle relays. Largo won the 4x400 and long jump.
