Two Barons sign with Ave Maria University

St. Petersburg Catholic basketball player Annie Artise and offensive lineman John Mandley signed scholarships to attend Ave Maria University in Naples.

Artise was the Barons' leading scorer the past two years and has scored over 1,000 points in her SPC career. She helped guide SPC to a 25-5 record this past season. Mandley, 6-3, 270, started on the offensive line the past two years and was a key blocker for runner Ryan Green.

Ave Maria is an NAIA school  that plays in the Sun Conference. The football team was 0-9 last season. The basketball team is 29-4 and currently playing in the NAIA National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa.

Oh, and by the way, a Gyrene is a nickname for a member of the U.S. Marine Corps.
