The dunk heard ’round west Tampa — and seen around cyberspace — is in contention for the most dazzling high school basketball play of the year.
Berkeley Prep senior Nelson Agholor's one-handed throwdown in the Class 4A region finals is among the 16 chosen by MaxPreps as a finalist for play-of-the-year honors. In bracketology fashion, the website is allowing viewers to select the play; Agholor is pitted against a one-handed alley-oop jam by Orange (Calif.) Lutheran's Gabe York in the round of 16.
A Southern California signee (in football), Agholor's dunk — over the head of Fort Myers Bishop Verot big man Brian Reeves — currently has more than 49,000 views on YouTube.
Robinson's Justin Madison is also nominated for his free-throw line dunk in a Feb. 3 win over Gaither. Madison averaged 11.6 points and seven rebounds a game for the region semifinalist Knights.
Madison is paired against Fresno Bullard's Walter Orr, whose buzzer-beating 3 toppled Long Beach Poly 54-52 in the California playoffs.
