Just a week into the season, the Berkeley Prep volleyball team has already jumped into the No. 1 spot in the MaxPreps national top 25 high school rankings.

The Buccaneers, the defending Class 3A state champs, began the season ranked second, but move to No. 1 after top-ranked Louisville (Ky.)  Assumption fell to No. 7 Muncie (Ind.) Burris last week. Berkeley Prep is one of just two ranked Florida teams -- Tallahassee Leon is ranked

Berkeley Prep (3-0) opened the season with easy three-game wins over St. Pete Catholic, Tampa Catholic and Holy Names. The Buccaneers also earned impressive three-game preseason victories over Plant and Fort Myers.

Junior outside hitter Jordan Burgess, last year's Class 3A player of the year, is averaging 3.7 kills a game, and senior middle hitter Amber Mirabello is added 2.9 kills a game. Setter Mackenzie Dagostino paces Berkeley with 9.0 assists a game and libero Natasha Rowland is averaging 4.9 digs a game.

After playing district foe CCC on Thursday, Berkeley will get a major test this weekend in Gainesville, where they will play Buchholz -- winner of last weekend's GatorTown Classic - on Friday and P.K. Yonge on Saturday.
