East Lake began defense of its Class 5A state title with an emphatic 25-13, 25-16, 25-12 sweep of Lakewood.

The Eagles, trying to repeat as state champion as a member of Class 8A this season, received 14 kills from Brittnay Estes to overwhelm the Spartans (1-2).

“I think our offense was a little too fast for them,” East Lake coach Mike Estes said. “But (Lakewood coach) Sean (O’Flannery) will get them ready as the season goes on.”

Julia Brunner added seven kills while Brianna McComeskey and Jackie Wegner each had six kills for East Lake (1-0). Also for the Eagles, Rachel Reed contributed with 30 assists.
