For the Tampa Prep volleyball team – a squad with nine freshmen and sophomores on its 14-player roster – Tuesday’s regular-season opener against Tampa Catholic served as a dress rehearsal for a cast of players testing out their new roles.
The Terrapins handled the Crusaders with ease in their home gym, beating Tampa Catholic in three games, 25-20, 25-13, 25-21.
Virginia Tech commit Katie Krueger led Tampa Prep with 18 kills, while freshman outside hitter Corey Perkins added seven kills and five digs. Krueger, a 6-foot-2 junior, also added five digs and two blocks. Senior setter Lauren Shlemon tallied 32 assists and eight service aces.
The win included a third game in which the Terrapins rallied down 12-6 to score 10 out of 15 points, taking a 17-15 lead on their way to the win.
“We were just showing how young we are,” first-year Tampa Prep coach Jessica Lamm said. “Some of our older players haven’t been in that role of leadership yet. They’ve done is in practice but not in a game yet.
“After that Game 2, we kind of expected that to happen. They did exactly what they’re supposed to, they showed some guts out there and made sure they didn’t lose that game.”
